1 Star Guitar Hero players, DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY.
Like all folks who upgraded to the Playstation 3, I have a bunch of peripherals that suddenly became obsolete: Dance Dance Revolution pads, the EyeToy, and most of all, the controller for Guitar Hero. When I saw this in the stores it said right on the package “Compatible with Guitar Hero and Guitar Hero 2″. That was my only reason for buying it.
I found out quickly that “Compatible” is a very, very loose term.
There is a switch for the Guitar Hero 1 and Guitar Hero 2. First, you have to press the start and the Green fret button to navigate the song menus, and before you actually play a song you have to press a different combination to play right handed-or left handed. It is indeed possible to at least _play_ the games, and it works for Guitar Hero Rocks the 80’s too.
Once you start playing, however, the problems are immediately noticeable:
(1) The fret buttons don’t light up. You have no way of knowing if your fingers are on the right frets until you strum, and by then it’s too late.
(2) There is noticeable lag when strumming - playing above the medium difficulty levels is simply impossible.
(3) The tilt sensor doesn’t work. Activating Star Power is limited to using the select button, which most Guitar Hero players will agree, is terribly awkward.
While this converter allows you to use DualShock controllers on the Playstation 3, some of the D-Pad functionality doesn’t work at all.
Pelican has deilvered great products for the Playstation, but this one did not meet my expectations. Your best options (for now) are to either save your money for the eventual Guitar Hero 3 controller, or keep your Playstation 2 console.
1 Star it didn’t work at all!!!!
Everything plugged in fine, just didn’t work. I bought it specifically to play Guitar Hero and no such luck.
2 Stars Not worth the money.
I bought my ps3 after accidentally tripped over my controller wire and incidentally breaking my ps2, thought since it’s advertised as “backward compatible” it’d be a nice investment for the future. Bought a couple of this converter to make use of my old ps2 controllers, I was expecting this to work just like the ps3 controller that came with the game but it wasn’t even close. While on SOME ps3 games this converter works flawlessly (i.e. Virtual Tennis 3 for example), but other games (i.e. Virtual Fighter 5) this converter would only work partially (in VF5 only the hit buttons work, direction buttons are not responding) or in some cases it doesn’t work at all. Then I tried some of my old ps2 games, this converter does NOT work with ANY of the old games, because while booting up ps2 games in ps3 it’ll require the user to “press the PS button”, which doesn’t exist in ps2 controllers or on this converter. So I had a bunch ps2 games including Guitar Hero that I can’t play. It was frustrating for a while until I finally found a good converter, for those people who are in the same boat as me, trying to make use of your old controllers on ps3 including DDR pads and Guitar Hero guitars, the converter you want to get is the one made by Pelican Accessories, gamestop.com carries that item (search for “ps3 controller adapter”). Although it’s not perfect and some features won’t be there (tilting the guitar) but it is the best if not only worthy converter out there today.
4 Stars Pretty Good
Pretty good converter. Worked well with ps2 games when played on the ps3 system. I had a few problems with Guitar Hero I and II, and III just didn’t work at all. Not the best item for ps2 guitar controllers on ps3, but other than that, it worked well.
